Callout for Issue #3 – we’re open for pitches and submissions!

posted in: Blog, Magazine | 0

Hold on to your hats: we are now accepting submissions for Issue #3 of Hot Chicks with Big Brains.

We have a dozen slots for written and visual content and are now paying $150 per commissioned piece. The best way to figure out what will sit well with our publication is to take a look at our previous issues.

As with everything we do, we aim to present a magazine full of intersectional feminism. In each issue we feature at least one Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander, one woman with a disability, a broad cross-section of LGBTQIA+ people, and many other culturally diverse women. Non-binary individuals are welcome. We do not currently have the facilities to translate work, but if your work involves linguistically diverse women please get in touch with ideas for engagement.

Please also note: Hot Chicks with Big Brains has always been interested in what women do for work and how they present themselves in the world. (As in, the “hot chicks” part, and the “big brains” part.) If these overlap, even better! Eg: women in STEMM have to be super resilient and dress in certain ways, motherhood is labour and requires sacrificing your body for the human it creates, and female artists are often also expected to look like models to self-promote their work. We welcome all content that is about women and feminism, but content that actually speaks to themes we actively engage in will be prioritised. Check out our About Us page if you’re unfamiliar with our background.

Timeline

Deadline for pitches (both written and visual): 5pm Friday 17 March 2017

Deadline for full submissions (both written and visual): 5pm Friday 31 March 2017

If you pitch us an idea by March 17 and we request to see more, please know that you will need to have a draft or outline ready for consideration by March 31. There will then be a few weeks between March 31 and print deadlines to allow for the editorial and artistic guidance process. If you pitch us ideas, we will presume you are able to work to these timelines.

Guidelines for written work

Hot Chicks with Big Brains is first and foremost about conversations. We began a few years ago purely as an interview series and we still aim to prioritise that type of content. If you have ideas for women to interview please tell us why you think you’re the best person for the job. What also love pitches that offer to record guided conversations between two women about their shared expertise or experiences.

We also like all other kinds of non-fiction. Memoir, personal essay, narrative non-fiction, investigative journalism, or any combo of the above. If it’s an essay or reportage, tell us about who you’d like to interview for comment on the topic and why. We do not publish academic-style work, but will definitely consider an essay or report that requires some footnoting. Pieces between 800 and 1500 words are ideal, but if you feel strongly that you need more words, we’re definitely suggestive.

Guidelines for visual work

We will need a Featured Artist for Issue #3 – their work will be displayed in a very special way and we run a Q an A with our Featured Artists as well. (Issue #1 was a glossy centre fold-out for Leecee Carmichael, and Issue #2 was thick cardboard perforated pages that people could tear out and put on their walls for Ayaka Soga. Yours will be something similarly wonderful!)

We’d like to hear from photographers with ideas for image essays, and fashion shoots that are body-positive. Any illustrators, printmakers, and painters are welcome to send ideas through. The only limitation is that you must be able to scan and send your work (or photos of your work) to us in high resolution. As with written work, visual work that speaks to our themes will be prioritised.

Artists are welcome to pitch a concept and send their portfolio by the ‘pitch’ deadline if they can then do mock-ups or send drafts through in the following fortnight.

Hop to it! We can’t wait to hear from you!

Please send all pitches and submissions to: hotchickswithbigbrains[at]gmail.com – we will respond (in time) to every application.

Issue #2 will (almost certainly) be sold out by the time Issue #3 goes to the printers, so grab a copy here. Issue #1 is definitely, completely, absolutely sold out. That happened ages ago, duh.

We would like to thank headspace for the funding that has allowed us to significantly increase contributor payments and print numbers for Issue #3.
