Issue #5 Call Out: Open for Submissions

Pitch us, please!

There are about a dozen slots for written and visual content and we pay $150 per commissioned piece. The best way to figure out what we want is to take a look at our previous issues. We do not accept completed submissions, but we do welcome emails with multiple pitch ideas.

As with everything we do, we aim to present a magazine full of intersectional feminism. In each issue we feature at least one Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander, one woman with a disability, a broad cross-section of LGBTQIA+ people, and many other culturally diverse women. Gender non-binary individuals are welcome. We do not currently have the facilities to translate work, but if your work involves linguistically diverse women please get in touch with ideas for engagement.

Tips for written pitches

First and foremost: we are a publication for women who work. There are plenty of other places that will publish general women’s interest and feminist content.

Hot Chicks with Big Brains prioritises primary sources – that means interviews and conversations where women speak for themselves. If you have ideas for women to interview please tell us why you think you’re the best person for the job. We also love pitches where writers offer to record guided conversations between two women about their shared expertise or experiences.

We also like all other kinds of non-fiction. Memoir, personal essay, narrative non-fiction, investigative journalism, or any combo of the above. If it’s an essay or reportage, tell us about who you’d like to interview for comment on the topic and why. We do not publish academic work, but will definitely consider an essay or report that requires some footnoting. Pieces between 800 and 1200 words are ideal, but in-conversations are more like 2000 words, so if you feel strongly that you need more space we’re open to suggestions.

Tips for visual pitches

We’d like to hear from photographers with ideas for visual essays, or (body-positive) fashion shoots. In the past we have published high quality reproductions of paintings, photographs of ceramic work, scans of illustrations, and digital work as well. As with written work, visual work that speaks to our themes (women + work) will be prioritised. ]

In previous pitch rounds we received a lot of emails from artists just providing a link to their previous work with no real pitch, and that meant there were no concepts for us to be able to actually commission. We need to see an idea you have about some new work you could create.

As with all previous issues, we will need a Featured Artist for Issue #5. Their work will be displayed over several spreads, printed onto postcards, and we’ll interview them. If you would like to be considered for the position, please indicate this in your email.

Timeline

Deadline for pitches (both written and visual): 5pm Friday the 22nd of December

If you pitch us an idea by December the 22nd and we request to see more, please know that you will need to have a draft (of written or visual work) ready for consideration by Friday the 5th of January. There will then be 2 weeks to allow for the editorial and artistic guidance process. If you pitch us ideas, we will presume you are able to work to these timelines.

Digital back issues are available for purchase here. Issue 4 (which launched late November) is available for purchase here.
