Q&A: Girls to the Front at The Zoo (April 2017)

On Friday 21st April, Brisbane’s The Zoo is celebrating “a night showcasing strong, female talent in the music industry” with their appropriately titled event, Girls to the Front.

For this Q&A, Hot Chicks with Big Brains caught up with three of the five incredible female-fronted acts ahead of the event to find out a bit about who they are and what they’re most looking forward to about playing Girls to the Front.

ROO

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your music?

ROO is a swampy, electric, blues-rock duo made up of ‘Big Red’ Roo (Lead vocals/Guitar/Songwriter) and Dean Hamilton (Drums/Vocals). Combining soulful vocals, tight harmonies, grungy guitar and jazz-influenced drums, our live shows are emotionally honest, loud and fun. We have been playing shows for 18 months and in that time have also released our self-recorded music.

What does playing Girls to the Front mean to you?

We are excited that The Zoo is running this series to celebrate female-fronted bands and we are very excited to be included on this amazing line-up.

What are you most looking forward to about Friday night, and what can Girls to the Front attendees expect from your performance?

This will be our first show at The Zoo! We’re really looking forward to opening Girls to the Front, and are excited to see the other amazing bands! We’ll be playing a set of live adaptations of tracks from our releases LOVE ROO XO and LOVE YOU II. It will be loud and heartfelt with just a little intentionally awkward banter.

AMELA

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your music?

My name is Amela, I’m a singer/songwriter and currently playing with an awesome band!

What does playing Girls to the Front mean to you?

It’s super exciting to be sharing a stage with other female-led bands! I feel like this event really celebrates women in the industry and I think there should be more and more events like this.

What are you most looking forward to about Friday night, and what can Girls to the Front attendees expect from your performance?

People can expect a fun, eclectic show for my performance! I’ve really been enjoying playing with the band and I can’t wait for Friday’s gig! I am most looking forward to having a nice little dance watching the other gals rock the stage!

LEANNE TENNANT

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your music?

I’m a musician of the Alt. Blues, and Southern Gothic type.  I like writing about many different topics ranging from stealing buses to songs about Tequila.  I also have a strange obsession with Hyenas and Stationery.

What does playing Girls to the Front mean to you?

I’ve wanted to play The Zoo since I was 13 years old so it’s a dream come true, especially getting to share it with a bunch of kick ass female acts.  Women rock.

What are you most looking forward to about Friday night, and what can Girls to the Front attendees expect from your performance?

I’m looking forward to playing with my band.  I’m lucky enough to be joined on the evening by a stellar line-up of muso’s including the guys from Mexico City, The Bowls Club and Danny Widdicombe.  I’m also looking forward to catching the other acts.  Attendees will just have to come and find out!
