Can you tell me a bit about who you are and what you do?

Well, let’s see… My name’s Selita Laubuka, aka Lita. I was born in Fiji and raised (-ish) in Australia. I’m currently working on a solo music project that is very much influenced by my band Lita and The Bones, yet taking on some other spices in new sounds and instruments where I want to feel more connected to musically and lyrically.

Can you pinpoint the moment you knew you wanted to make music? Tell me about it.

When I was about 11. Definitely listening to my mum leading the church choir and thinking she was an angel. While my dad kept time either clapping sticks or spoons and singing the bass line. I instantly fell in love with the harmonies.

Were you always encouraged to pursue a career within the music industry?

I was definitely encouraged by my friends. But encouraged by my parents? Not so much. They didn’t see it as a promising career or a ‘real’ degree as my mum would put it – classic. But what I do for a living I never saw as what puts money in the bank.

I love music. I love making it. I love sharing it.

I wouldn’t feel as if I’m living if I didn’t. And I like annoying my mum. Bless her good heart.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career so far?

Haha! Trying out for Australian Idol when I was 18 and being shut down hard. Don’t sing Tracy Bonham’s “Mother Mother” if you’re trying to get into the Pop industry. Also, screw Idol. But for real, starting out as any independent artist isn’t the most lucrative path. Money is always a challenge. It can be very defeating. It takes hard work if you really want it. Am I right, ladies? Amen.

What has given you the greatest sense of achievement, career-wise?

Spending over a year writing and self-recording my last album ‘Silver’ with Lita and The Bones for sure. Myself and music partner Jason Czapla spent many, many hours on those songs in his self built studio, finding new sounds and layers that has definitely influenced how I want to compose music in my solo chapter and in general.
